is there a way to implement updates and continue a saved game? I love using the gem but find it annoying to have to begin a new gane

Generally not, no. If you try your existing save with the new versions, then just make sure to back up your old copies so that you can go back to them and your old game when/if it doesn’t work with the new versions.
